A gram of mRNA is tens of thousands of vaccine doses. Sit with that for a second, because it quietly changes what a factory has to be.
The old shape of pharma was one enormous plant, a global cold chain, and a map covered in arrows. Make it in one place, ship it everywhere. That shape exists because most products are not worth much per kilogram, so you chase scale to survive.
A gram is tens of thousands of doses
mRNA breaks that. When a gram is worth that many doses, the physical job of making a dose is tiny. And BioNTech did the obvious thing with that fact. Their BioNTainer is a drug-substance module built from six ISO shipping containers. Two modules, drug substance and formulation, sit in about 800 square metres and turn out up to roughly 50 million doses a year. The site they dropped it into, in Kigali, was about a 150 million dollar investment for around 100 people. Not a cathedral. A node.
Ugur Sahin described the whole idea as reducing complexity by copying the manufacturing unit and moving it somewhere else. That is the tell. You are not scaling up. You are stamping out.

Nobody built a new kind of factory
Here is the part that matters for anyone still calling this a lab. Nobody built a new kind of factory here. The bench process for making mRNA was always small. All BioNTech did was certify it, wrap it in stainless steel, and put it on a truck. The lab was the factory the whole time. They just gave it a loading bay.
This is a resilience story, not a cost story
For a board, this is not a cost story. It is a resilience story. You put production next to demand, in Rwanda, in Senegal, wherever, and you stop being one broken supply line away from failure.
